A Foundation in Scientific Excellence

The Early Years: From Physics to Purpose

Dr. Carter’s journey to orthodontics began in an unexpected place – the world of physics research. This scientific foundation would prove invaluable throughout his career, instilling in him a deep appreciation for precision, methodology, and evidence-based decision-making. The analytical thinking and problem-solving skills developed during his physics research continue to influence his approach to complex orthodontic cases today.

Seven Years in Africa

A Life-Changing Adventure

Perhaps no experience has shaped Dr. Carter’s approach to patient care more profoundly than the seven years he and Amy spent as volunteers in a rural village on the edge of the Sahara Desert in Burkina Faso, Western Africa. This wasn’t a short-term mission trip or a brief volunteer experience – it was a complete immersion into a different culture, a different way of life, and a different understanding of what it means to serve others. Their partnership with ministries in West Africa has extended over the last two and a half decades.

Living in a rural African village taught Dr. Carter lessons that no textbook could provide. He learned that healthcare isn’t just about technical expertise – it’s about understanding people, meeting them where they are, and providing care with dignity and respect regardless of circumstances. He discovered that a smile truly is a universal language, transcending cultural and linguistic barriers to create connections and build trust.

Language and Communication

During his time in Africa, Dr. Carter developed his multilingual abilities, learning to communicate across cultural and linguistic barriers. This experience continues to benefit his patients today, as he regularly speaks multiple languages weekly in his practice.

Building Relationships Across Cultures

One of Dr. Carter's favorite stories from his time in Africa involves connecting with a West African woman in a Hy-Vee grocery store here in Gretna. When he heard her speaking her native language, he was able to greet her and have a conversation in her own tongue.
